TL;DR - Computer had no prior OS. I purchased Windows 10 from Microsoft. Windows 10 won't install properly even on a brand new laptop with no OS. I consulted with a Microsoft online tech rep, who tried to convince me that a repeating infinite loop was 'normal' for Win10 installation. Uninstalled, refunded, and bought a (legit? who knows) copy of Win7 instead.
Windows 0/10 - would not recommend.
I purchased Win10 for a new laptop (no preexisting OS at all). Win10 downloaded to a USB, and then I installed Win10 from USB to the laptop.
Now the setup procedure gets stuck on a restart loop.
First, the 'Let's get connected' screen shows up. I select the relevant wifi network.
Second, the 'Get going fast' screen comes up. I select 'Use express settings'.
Finally, the circling dots screen comes up with 'Just a moment...' and then it restarts.
Has anybody encountered this and can you fix it?
Edit: Just spoke to an online assistant, Francis V, in Microsoft Answer Tech. His sole solution was to repeatedly assure me that this was completely normal, and that the process can take up to 8 hours. Which leads us to the ridiculous conclusion that it's 'normal' for me to be sitting next to my computer, clicking twice each cycle, for hundreds of identical restart cycles, for eight hours. I may post the screenshot of this conversation online somewhere, it's by turns hilarious and pathetic.
For context, I purchased the laptop in China and purchased the legit copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft store online. Most of my Chinese peers were completely nonplussed as to why anybody would purchase software legitimately. I told them it came with better customer support. I now feel suitably foolish.
Final Edit: Got in touch with Microsoft's customer service. Their tech support office was closed and I can only call back during U.S. office hours (I'm in China so that won't work). Their sales office was still open and I got a refund.
Within two hours I had a copy of Windows 7 installed. I asked for a legitimate legal copy only, and they told me it was legit, but it was purchased from a Chinese vendor so who knows for sure. I've made a bona fide effort to purchase Windows, Microsoft ONLY allows me to purchase Windows 10, and Windows 10 cannot be installed properly no matter what I try. Back to Windows 7 it is.
Let somebody else be their guinea pigs.
